EYE EYE
If you're planning a trip to Thailand I'd recommend an eye test as part of your itinerary. Eye tests here are free, unlike in the UK where they can cost upwards of 20 pounds. The test is pretty comprehensive and the price of lenses and frames, should you need them, is also significantly cheaper.
Last weekend I had an eye test. It's been more than two years since my last one (which was also out here) and surprisingly my sight hasn't deteriorated during that time. I had already prepared myself for new glasses so I was pleasantly surprised.

I hate eye tests because every time I have one, I end up bursting out laughing when the optician dude starts looking in my eyes with his little gadgets. When I was at the hairdressers yesterday, I started thinking about being at the optician and burst out laughing.
Little gadgets? Where do you go to get your eyes tested Matt?
Mine were tested using a huge machine that wouldn't have looked out of place on the starship Enterprise. It's all computerized now, or at least the place I went to is.
andrew, where did you get your eyes checked? Was it a chain?
I've had my eyes checked both here and in the U.S., and here, while free, has been less than impressive. The ubiquitous Top Charoen chain uses these big plastic eyeglasses and they manually slide in new lenses into the slot you look through. Not like the big machine I'm used to back in the States where they push a button and it rotates the lens you're looking through.
Back home, I usually like to ask the eye doctor (also note--it often won't be a doctor doing the test here) to do some back-and-forth with this lens or that when I'm not sure which is clearer. Here that's a hassle because they have to pull out the lens and put in the other one. Ruins my ability to actually determine which is clearer.
I know where I can go to pay for it, but I'd love to get my eyes checked free at a place with more modern equipment. My current glasses are getting blurry. Such is life..
Rikker - Thanks for your comments. The chain I went to is called BVAX and is part of The Better Vision Group. Their website (in Thai) is www.btv.co.th. I went to their shop inside The Mall Tha Phra but they have other shops and units across Bangkok.
The machine they used was almost like an x-ray machine and the optician changed the lenses using a selection of dials. Once he'd determined my requirements he did use the old-fashioned glasses with the slide-in lenses - but that was only after using the big machine.
I hope this information helps, and good luck.
Thanks for the info. I'll find a nearby branch and be paying them a visit soon.
