NEWSPAPERS ARE DEAD? THINK AGAIN

If you think the demise of newspapers is imminent you should think again. The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) conference in Gothenburg heard yesterday that sales of newspapers around the world are up 2.57% year-on-year, and up an impressive 9.39% compared to five years ago. Every day more than 1.7 billion people around the world read a newspaper in print form.
Timothy Balding, executive director of WAN said: "You would not believe these figures if you read what some people are saying about the imminent demise of papers. There are signs of decline in the States and Britain but it's nothing to worry about. They say the newspaper in print is almost dead. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it, the figures just don't match it."
I don't think it's a reason for newspaper publishers to be complacent but it's certainly not as bad as many people think.

...but wouldnt you agree that the online media is growing at a much much higher pace?

What if someone were to make a statistic on the change in the "Number of print readers vs Total number of consumers"

Sajal,

Online media is growing, yes, but until advertisers in Thailand make the switch then it's always going to be limited.

I saw some statistics last week that showed just 1.1% of all advertising is spent online. That's tiny compared to the traditional media.

I think in Thailand the number of people who read print is still healthy, and outside of the under-18 age group I would guess more people still read print than online. Just my thoughts.

Is this where I get to say 'I told you so'? ;P

BTW, can you tell I'm finally catching up on a couple months of blog posts, leaving comments on your older posts? I spent six weeks in the States and got completely behind on my feedreading.

Cheers.
