THAI MAGS: THE LATEST CRAZE
Even just a few years ago you would have struggled to find a Thai magazine offering a free gift - or cover mount as they are more commonly known.
Yesterday, in a very rough survey, I would estimate that 25 percent of the top Thai magazines - especially in the fashion and luxury sectors - are offering them with their current editions. Pictured (right) are just two of many examples.
Whether it's a "buy-one-get-one-free" voucher for Starbucks or a cotton designer bag that comes directly with the magazine, these free gifts are far more prevalent now than they ever were.
The question must be - do they work? Do people (other than crazy people like me) buy magazines solely because of the free gift attached?
The answer, in my view, must be yes or why would publishers be doing it in such large numbers?

Firstly it great to have the Bugle back. All I can say is that my 3 year old granddaughter chooses her weekly comic that I buy her purely on the gift on the front. She spends ages choosing from around a dozen or so which all have gifts every week. Maybe this tells you something about adult readers - the content being roughly equal then the gift may just be the deciding factor. This says a lot about reader loyalty I think.
